Texas Unites wrap up – It was a Success!

It’s been a long time since I’ve written and I apologize. I’ve been “wearing another hat” as Jim Tedford would say – coordinating the Texas Unites for Animals Conference in Austin. Hosted by the Texas Animal Shelter Coalition and the Texas Federation of Humane Societies, and coordinated by yours truly, we brought together 377 animal care and sheltering professionals – rescuers, shelter staff, veterinarians, advocates, animal control officers, managers, directors, and so much more – from across the country (and Canada!).  42 of the best minds in the industry presented 49 workshops in six tracks – management, communication, operations, animals, adoptions, and veterinary care – plus the keynote session.  Attendees earned CEU credits from TSDHS, SAWA, TVMA, TBVME, LBVME, and more. We filled the exhibit hall with 47 vendors including PetSmart Charities, Petfinder.com, Petco Foundation, ASPCA, TACA, THLN, TCAAP, Latham Foundation, Pet Point, Chameleon, Shelter Buddy, and many, many,...

Volunteer photographers help promote Dallas Animal Services’ adoptable pets

It’s true: A picture is indeed worth 1,000 words, and a good picture is worth even more to a homeless pet waiting in a shelter.  Take Hunter for instance.  He’s just one of many fabulous cats and dogs available for adoption at Dallas Animal Services, and isn’t he a handsome guy?  Beginning last month, thanks to professional photographer Teresa Berg, graphics guru Molly DeVoss, Animal Shelter Commission Chair Mary Spencer, the team at Dallas Animal Services, and the generosity of Cafe Pacific owner and Six Flags Over Texas Fund Ltd. General Partner Jack Knox, Hunter and the other adoptable animals at DAS will have the benefit of professional “glamour shots” to help them find new homes. Together these dedicated members of the community have taken an unused retail space in the lobby of the Adoption Center and turned it into a fully equipped photo studio where professional photographers volunteer...

Westminster viewers don’t want to see homeless pets in shelters, even in commercials

Have you seen the latest news from the famous Westminster Dog Show?  Turns out their viewers are turned off by Pedigree’s ads promoting dog adoption.  You know – the ones featuring dogs left in shelters because someone didn’t spay/neuter their pet, or someone thought “forever home” meant just until their dog got to be too much trouble?  So Westminster dumped Pedigree and their dog adoption drive.
