One Nation Under Dog premieres tonight on HBO

June 18, 2012

One Nation Under Dog: Stories of Fear, Loss & Betrayal will make its debut tonight at 8 p.m. on HBO. The film focuses on the sobering and often shocking realities behind America’s relationship with dogs, taking an unflinching look not only at how far some dog lovers will go for their pets, but also how far the nation must still go before all dogs are treated humanely. One Nation Under Dog: Stories of Fear, Loss & Betrayal offers an eye-opening, three-part portrait of America’s complex relationship with dogs – Fear, Loss, and Betrayal. Many people do not know that 25% of dogs in shelters are actually purebreds, and many pet store dogs come from mass breeding operations known as puppy mills. For many dogs from mills and animal shelters, rescue is the only hope of survival. The Betrayal segment follows front-line volunteers (some from right here in the DFW...

Amanda Lollar, Bat World Sanctuary win $6.1 million judgment against Mary Cummins

Have you heard about this? A well-known and well-respected North Texas bat rescue and sanctuary has been under fire from a disgruntled ex-volunteer for years.  Mary Cummins, posing as a whistle-blower has been alledgeing all kinds of misdeeds by the sanctuary since leaving her internship there in 2010.  Most rational people I talked to thought it was all lies and craziness, but Mary Cummins never let up.  Until today, when a judge awarded the bat sanctuary 6.1 million dollars in damages. Here’s the press release, in its entirety from Bat World: Bat World Sanctuary, an international non-profit organization devoted to rescuing and rehabilitating bats, and its president, Amanda Lollar of Mineral Wells were awarded $6.1 million in damages by a Tarrant County district judge today in a defamation lawsuit. After a four-day trial the court found that Mary Cummins of Los Angeles, California had committed defamation against Amanda Lollar...

Appalled by internet sales of puppies? The USDA needs to know.

Appalled by internet sales of puppies? The USDA needs to know.

Concerned about puppy mills, large commercial breeders, and others who would sell a puppy – site-unseen – over the Internet, and then ship it to a home thousands of miles away they’ve never even visited? Here’s your chance to do something about this awful practice, and hopefully get some protection for those puppies. Under the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA), commercial breeders selling directly to pet stores (Business to Business) must be licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  However, the AWA does not regulate breeders that sell directly to the public (Business to Consumer). The AWA was passed in 1966, prior to the Internet.  Now there is a growing trend among commercial puppy breeders and puppy mills to cut out the middleman – the pet shop – and use websites to sell their dogs  – without ANY regulation. So now the USDA has issued a recommended AWA...

Movie producers scouring shelters and using Facebook to find Benji look-alike

It’s hard to believe that it has been 38 years since the original “Benji” move debuted in 1974. Now Walden Media (the Chronicles of Narnia series) is teaming up with writer-director-producer Brandon Camp (Love Happens) on a contemporary reboot of the wildly successful film franchise, and they are using Facebook to help cast a leading mutt to star in the movie’s title role. Did you know the original Benji was “discovered” in a shelter in California? So in addition to the Facebook search, the filmmakers will also be scouring animal shelters, as well as traditional animal talent agencies and trainers for dogs that have the looks, onscreen charisma and ability to take direction required to step into the film’s starring role. Director Brandon Camp and renowned Animal Trainer Mark Forbes have been searching high and low for just the right dog.  “Brandon and I attended the Best Friends Animal...

Update: One lost foster dog found, another remains missing near Stonebriar Mall

Last week, we reported that two foster dogs from Animal Rescue of Texas were missing after their foster mom’s car was in an accident.  The car flipped, the back window blew out, both dogs took off and no one had seen them since.  There is some good news to report today.  Domino, the white male terrier, was spotted by a good Samaritan in a residential neighborhood near Thorncliff Dr and Autumwood Dr in Frisco last night, but he bolted when approached.  Today, however, they were able to coax him with food and made the phone call his foster mom had been waiting for. Sadly, Jolie, the little black and tan Chihuahua is still missing.  Searchers think she may be in the same area where Domino was found, but know she could be anywhere within a few miles of the accident, which took place at 121 and Preston Road. If...
