Parker County animal rescuer not “rescuing” after all – and she’s not alone

Parker County animal rescuer not “rescuing” after all – and she’s not alone

On Wednesday, fifty-eight dogs were seized by Parker County authorities from a residence in the 900 block of Lynch Bend Road. According to the Sheriff’s office, 31 dogs were living in crates inside the residence in their own urine and feces.  Some of the crates were stacked on top of each other, and many were without food and water. The 27 outdoor dogs didn’t fare much better. “Several outdoor pens containing puppies were filled with animal feces, urine and vomit” according to Parker County Animal Control Supervisor Karen Kessler, who called it “the worst level of unsanitary conditions.”  Two dogs, one just a puppy, had to be euthanized due to severe neglect and health conditions, according to a news release from the Parker County Sheriff’s Office. In the news release, the owner of the residence is identified as Teresa Weldon.  Teresa is the founder of Four Paws and Hooves...

Some thoughts on Reverend Wright, Sadie, and the bond for Darius Ewing

Some thoughts on Reverend Wright, Sadie, and the bond for Darius Ewing

When Darius Ewing, the man accused of burning a puppy in Pleasant Grove last month, turned himself in a judge set his bond at $ 100,000. His lawyer has since requested a bond reduction hearing because his family can’t afford the money necessary to get him out of jail.  That hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. on the 6th floor of the Frank Crowley Courts Building. In a recent NBC5 report, the Rev. Ronald Wright, of the group – ironically named -  Justice Seekers Texas, is quoted as saying “A bond to be set at that is an insult. It says that dogs are more important when it comes to African-American men.” Let’s think logically through the Reverend’s statement, and try to ignore the race card he’s clearly playing. I don’t recall ever hearing of an instance where someone intentionally and maliciously murdered someone and...

Homeward Bound showcases black dogs during Back in Black 2 Campaign

Homeward Bound showcases black dogs during Back in Black 2 Campaign

Black cats and black dogs make wonderful pets with great personalities, but rescuers and shelter workers will tell you black dogs and cats are often overlooked for adoption.  Why?  The color of a pet’s fur has no relationship to their ability to provide unconditional love, companionship and devotion.  Some say old wives’ tales and superstitions plague black cats and dogs.  Other say black pets are so difficult to photograph that potential adopters searching online often overlook their sometimes dark and indistinguishable pictures.  Whatever the reason, anyone who owns a black cat or dog will tell you they are amazing creatures and every bit ad deserving of a loving homes as pets of other colors. Last year, in an effort to give them a better chance at being adopted, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary introduced Back in Black, a national campaign to showcase black dogs and cats . Over 900 black...

Dallas Animal Services & Humane Society of West Texas partnership saves 100 cats and kittens in one day

Dallas Animal Services & Humane Society of West Texas partnership saves 100 cats and kittens in one day

It’s kitten season once again and Dallas Animal Services is overflowing with cats and kittens with nowhere to go.  But this past Friday, nearly 100 kittens and their moms got a second chance when the Humane Society of West Texas in Lubbock stepped in and transferred them all to the foster-home based rescue group. It was a huge undertaking, and a great example of how partner organizations can help each other save more lives.  DAS staff and rescue coordinator worked overtime Friday, processing the necessary paperwork for all 100 cats and kittens. HSWT volunteers were able to get on the road with their precious cargo late that afternoon, arriving back in Lubbock very late Friday night. They then stayed up most of the night getting everyone fed, watered, and settled in. Any way you look at it, 100 cats and kittens are a lot to care for.  If you...

Mazie’s Mission Build A Rescue Clinic Gala May 18th

Mazie’s Mission‘s 1st Annual BARC (Build A Rescue Clinic) Gala will be held Friday, May 18.  This year’s theme – 2012: Disco Infurno!  The event will be held at Fairy Tale Manor, 10865 Preston Road in Frisco from 7 – 10 p.m. Tickets are only $75 and include dinner & drinks, disco dancing, raffles, prizes, auctions, and much more. Emceed by Tony Zazza of 103.7 Lite FM, the purpose of the event is to raise funds so Mazie’s Mission can build a veterinary clinic that serves rescue organizations. Non-profit, foster-home based organizations often spend 80%-90% of their annual budgets on veterinary care, and even then can only save a limited number of pets.  If Mazie’s Mission can make vet care much cheaper for rescues, they will be able to rescue more animals and euthanasia rates in our municipal shelters will decrease. Come on out and support Mazie’s Mission.  Tickets...

MAC celebrates “Real Men” who care about animals May 6th at Sambuca

MAC celebrates “Real Men” who care about animals May 6th at Sambuca

There are two kinds of men in this world: those who are cruel to animals, and those who love and protect them.  The guy on the left is Darius Ewing, now in police custody and charged with felony animal cruelty in the burning of a four-month old puppy.  The guy on the right is the man who will prosecute him – Dallas Assistant District Attorney David Alex – speaking to a crowd of animal lovers at a candlelight vigil in memory of the burned puppy. No one knows where Darius Ewing will be by the end of next week – in jail or out on bail I presume, but we do know where David Alex will be.  He and two other men who love and protect animals are being honored by Dallas Animal Advocates and the Metroplex Animal Coalition at their annual “Real Men Care” event. It takes a...

Precious Pearly , a gem of a kitty in need of a home

Precious Pearly , a gem of a kitty in need of a home

This beautiful little flame-point with the baby blue eyes and freckles on her ears is Pearly. Pearly needs a home. She was found sleeping on the front porch of a Good Samaritan who took her in out of the cold and took her to the vet. Now all she needs is a quiet family to give her the life she deserves. She’s quiet and definitely a lap cat. She gets along fairly well with other cats, but could easily be overwhelmed by an aggressive kitty. As you can see, Pearly has sensitive skin, like so many light-colored cats (and dogs!). She also has what the vet described as “thicker than normal” skin around her eyes, which gives her that sleepy look. She’s not blind, but her vision probably isn’t as good as it should be. She gets around well enough, but seems to take extra care when jumping down...

A 4-month-old puppy is fighting for its life after being set on fire last week in Pleasant Grove

A 4-month-old puppy is fighting for its life after being set on fire last week in Pleasant Grove

On April 4th, Dallas police responded to a call that a puppy was doused with lighter fluid and lit on fire in Pleasant Grove in southeast Dallas.  When officers arrived on the scene, they found the puppy badly burned and hiding behind an air conditioning unit.  Police contacted Dallas Animal Services, which in turn contacted DAS’ partner, DFW Rescue Me.  A volunteer with the group immediately transported the puppy to an emergency clinic for treatment. DFW Rescue Me has named the puppy Justice. Although he has second and third degree burns over 60% of his body, the vets treating him are cautiously optimistic that he will survive. Jim Wenger, president of DFW Rescue Me, said he is “cautiously optimistic” that the puppy, who still has his baby teeth, will survive.  Wenger said that Justice’s condition remains guarded. An animal cruelty investigation is now in progress.  DAS Animal Cruelty Supervisor...
