Loveable Charlie needs a forever home

November 27, 2012
Loveable Charlie needs a forever home

On a rainy night in early Summer, a tiny kitten with a shattered leg was left, alone and scared, in the night drop box at Dallas Animal Services. When the shelter vets found him the next morning, they knew he needed help, but they also realized that this was no ordinary kitten. As painful as that initial exam must have been, he never once stopped purring. Determined to save him, despite the need for costly orthopedic surgery the shelter could not provide, they reached out to Cat Matchers, a local cat rescue group. Cat Matchers agreed to take responsibility for the kitten, and had him transferred to a local veterinarian for surgery. Once released from the vet, he moved into his new volunteer foster home, where he immediately began to win over everyone he met. This tiny kitten never hissed or complained throughout his recovery. He just purred. About...

Mazie’s Marathon AdoptAThon brings 300 adoptable pets to Fairview this weekend

Mazie’s Mission will team up with PetSmart Charities to host a large scale pet adoption event this weekend. The “Forever Home Marathon” will be held at the Village at Fairview from 9:00 pm on Friday to 6:00 pm on Sunday. The goal for the event is to find loving homes for over 250 homeless animals in one weekend. Erin Shults, DVM and CEO of Mazie’s Mission states “We euthanize over 200,000 animals in North Texas every year. It is time to show the public the amazing animals that are available for adoption through shelters or rescue groups. The tide is turning where it is more popular to adopt a homeless pet than to buy a pet from a breeder, a pet store or online.” The event will last 45 hours, offering adoption discounts and specials during midnight hours. More than 300 animals will be onsite to choose from including...

Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week: Gracie, a black cat

Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week: Gracie, a black cat

Today as part of Petfinder.com‘s “Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week”, we’re featuring Gracie A735779 from Dallas Animal Services. Black cats are often overlooked in shelters and are hard to photograph, and they constantly battle the stigma created by old wives tales, folklore, and myths. That’s why black cats (and black dogs, too) are harder to adopt than pets of other colors. Gracie has a big personality in an elegant little body. She is super sweet, playful, and doesn’t mind other cats. She just needs a home of her own. Her adoption fee is only $ 55 and includes her spay, vaccinations, and microchipping.  The shelter is located at 1818 N. Westmoreland, Dallas (I-30 at Westmoreland) and they are open Monday – Saturday 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday noon until 5 p.m. Copyright Rebecca Poling 2012. All rights reserved. Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week: Morgan, a one-eyed Chihuahua

Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week: Morgan, a one-eyed Chihuahua

This week we’re celebrating Petfinder.com’s “Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week” by featuring a very special pet adoptable pet from Dallas Animal Services every day.  We’re starting things off with a bang with little Morgan A739158.  This cute Chihuahua was abandoned at the shelter with a ruptured eye.  The eye couldn’t be saved, but she can still see just fine out of the other eye, and dogs – unlike some humans – adjust quickly and easily to whatever comes there way! Actress Selma Blair has a one-eyed dog, as does Robert Verdi. The “security guard” at the Google Data Center in Oklahoma is a one-eyed dog. So, how about it? Can you give this lovely little girl the home she so badly wants? Dallas Animal Services is located at 1818 N. Westmoreland, Dallas, Texas 75212, and they are open Monday – Saturday 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday...

Meet Rosaleigh, our foster kitty

Meet Rosaleigh, our foster kitty

Rosaleigh is a wonderful, wonderful, kitty who needs a good home.  She loves people and only wants to be next to them.  She’s not annoying or clingy, but bonds with her human very quickly. She’s not afraid of strangers either, unless they are very loud and then she shows caution, but seldom bolts.   She has tons of energy and she is constantly exploring.  She loves to chase little balls around the room and play with catnip toys – she’s actually capable of entertaining herself very well. She sleeps on her cat bed in the foster room every night and never complains.  She’s very smart but not overly curious, and she is fascinated by running water.  She’ll sit in the window sill, on your lap, or if you leave, she’ll simply wait on her bed for you to return. I suspect she is an Abyssinian mix.  I don’t usually designate...

Cuddly, charismatic Carl charmed his way into a bit of a predicament

Cuddly, charismatic Carl charmed his way into a bit of a predicament

This is Carl, and he’s in a bit of a predicament. He was supposed to be euthanized last week, but the staff at Dallas Animal Services fell in love with him, so he’s getting a second chance.  That’s the good news. Here’s the predicament: the shelter, which holds over 800 animals, is full, and with as many as 100 animals coming in daily, there’s simply no room for Carl. The adoption center staff could try and send him to a rescue group, but they really don’t want Carl to take up a space in rescue that could go to a dog that needs the special TLC only rescue can provide. So Carl’s only option is to get himself adopted, and quickly. Carl is a 6 year old Dachshund/Chihuahua mix. He’s got a truly unique coloring, amazing ears, and so much charisma you can see it in his photo. It’s...

Homeward Bound showcases black dogs during Back in Black 2 Campaign

Black cats and black dogs make wonderful pets with great personalities, but rescuers and shelter workers will tell you black dogs and cats are often overlooked for adoption.  Why?  The color of a pet’s fur has no relationship to their ability to provide unconditional love, companionship and devotion.  Some say old wives’ tales and superstitions plague black cats and dogs.  Other say black pets are so difficult to photograph that potential adopters searching online often overlook their sometimes dark and indistinguishable pictures.  Whatever the reason, anyone who owns a black cat or dog will tell you they are amazing creatures and every bit ad deserving of a loving homes as pets of other colors. Last year, in an effort to give them a better chance at being adopted, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary introduced Back in Black, a national campaign to showcase black dogs and cats . Over 900 black...

Precious Pearly , a gem of a kitty in need of a home

Precious Pearly , a gem of a kitty in need of a home

This beautiful little flame-point with the baby blue eyes and freckles on her ears is Pearly. Pearly needs a home. She was found sleeping on the front porch of a Good Samaritan who took her in out of the cold and took her to the vet. Now all she needs is a quiet family to give her the life she deserves. She’s quiet and definitely a lap cat. She gets along fairly well with other cats, but could easily be overwhelmed by an aggressive kitty. As you can see, Pearly has sensitive skin, like so many light-colored cats (and dogs!). She also has what the vet described as “thicker than normal” skin around her eyes, which gives her that sleepy look. She’s not blind, but her vision probably isn’t as good as it should be. She gets around well enough, but seems to take extra care when jumping down...
