Rescued Tigers safe at Black Beauty Ranch; THLN meeting there Saturday

On Wednesday, in a small town southeast of Jackson, Mississippi, a team of experienced wildlife rescuers from the Humane Society of the United States, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and Carolina Tiger Rescue gathered to rescue eleven exotic animals from the Collins Zoo.  The Mississippi Department of Wildlife served a search and seizure warrant on the unaccredited roadside facility, paving the way for the seizure of three tigers, three cougars, two leopards, two wolf-hybrids and one Macaque monkey for violations of state permit requirements. When responders entered the property they found the animals housed in small pens with little space and no enrichment. The animals were underweight and suffering from a variety of medical ailments. HSUS is coordinating temporary placement of the animals at qualified sanctuaries until a judge determines the custody of the animals. Twenty-seven criminal charges have been filed against Gustave and Betty White,...

Colony of feral cats at Trinity Park in Fort Worth disappear; foul play suspected

Colony of feral cats at Trinity Park in Fort Worth disappear; foul play suspected

According to the City of Fort Worth, more than 5,000 cats wind up at Fort Worth’s municipal animal shelter each year. Many of those are feral cats – wild, undomesticated cats that are not adoptable and are not rescued.  So back in November, as part of a push to increase live outcomes at the City shelter,  the City of Fort Worth began a series of public meetings to discuss proposed implementation of a privately-funded, city-wide TNR ( Trap, Neuter, Return) program.  TNR is a  proven, humane method of managing feral and community cat populations and is used in cities across the country.  Feral, or community cats as they are sometimes called, are spayed, neutered, and vaccinated, and then released back into the wild with volunteer caretakers to feed and care for them. A pilot program involving multiple feral cat colonies had been under way for years at Trinity Park...

Waco Lions Club evicts 9 feral cats and their caregivers

Waco Lions Club evicts 9 feral cats and their caregivers

On Saturday, the Waco Lions Club effectively evicted 9 spayed, neutered, and vaccinted feral cats from their property, forcing the volunteers who had been caring for them to remove the feeding station and the cat’s shelter.  The Lions Club has threatened to post NO TRESPASSING signs to forbid the volunteers from continuing to feeding them. Nine feral cats are now left with no food, no shelter, and no one to care for them.  Very sad. Since 2007, Heart of Texas Feral Friends, a group associated with the Humane Society of Central Texas has cared for the cats on the Lions Club property, with their permission.  When the volunteers started TNR’ing he cats back in 2007, there were 40+ of them.  Thanks to TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return), today there are now only nine.  Their efforts resulted in a perfect example of what TNR is – a humane approach to caring for feral...

Your Call Today Can Save Horses from Slaughter

Guest post by Pamela Duffy Horse slaughter is about to become legal in the US again!  We need to flood our US Senators and US House reps with phone calls TODAY and TOMORROW!  The horse slaughter situation is looking really bleak, and this is the last chance effort to prevent horse slaughter from starting up again in the US.  If you want to help, it’s easy—look up your US senators and your US house rep at the link below (if you’re in Texas, I’ve supplied numbers below), call their office, give them your name and zip code, tell them you are a constituent and read this quote or some variation of it:  “Please co-sponsor or at least support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S.1176/H.R. 2966).”    You can even call late at night if you’d rather leave a voicemail. Please share this information. The more people calling, the better...

RPOA joins AKC, TVMA, CFA, etc. opposing “sentimental value” for dogs

December 1, 2011

Remember RPOA?  They’re b-a-a-a-a-c-c-k-k.  Responsible Pet Owners Alliance, and it’s legislative arm, RPOA Texas Outreach, led the breeders who opposed the package of ordinances passed by the Dallas City Council in 2008.  They, and their friends in the AKC, NRA and TRA, fought long and hard against ordinances that banned chaining dogs, prohibited auctioning off pets as prizes, and required permits for intact animals and breeders.  Now they’re joining up again, this time with the Texas Veterinary Medical Association, to fight a recent Texas appeals court ruling that allows for a family whose dog was mistakenly euthanized to recover, not just the dog’s market value, but its sentimental value as well. They would prefer Texas courts rely instead on an antiquated (1891!) court ruling that doesn’t allow for any damages other than the animal’s actual market value, or what it “earns” for is owner.  At the time that 1891...

AVMA, TVMA, AKC, and others oppose Texas appeals court ruling that pets have “sentimental value”

November 30, 2011

It was just a few weeks ago when animal welfare advocates celebrated a Texas appeals court ruling that allowed a family whose dog was mistakenly euthanized to recover, not just the dog’s market value – as is the case with other types of personal property – but its sentimental value as well.  It was the first time in Texas, where pets are considered property under the law, that someone was able to sue for a pet’s sentimental value.  Randy Turner, who represented the dog’s owner (pro bono) in the case, told the Star-Telegram “No matter how attached they were to their pet, and no matter how devastated they were by its death….they were only entitled to the ‘market value’ of the animal.”  For Texas courts to now acknowledge that a pet’s value is greater than the cost to acquire it, was truly a victory for animal advocates...

Humane Society takes Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce to task for auctioning puppy at annual fundraiser

Humane Society takes Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce to task for auctioning puppy at annual fundraiser

Pets are not merchandise.  They’re not disposable.  Pets are a commitment, and the decision to adopt needs to be taken seriously.  They’re not something to be won at auction or in a game of chance.  But it appears the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce disagrees.  They’ve decided,  again this year, to auction a live puppy at their 2011 Fiesta Live! event, which takes place this Saturday, October 15th at Embassy Suites Outdoor World in Grapevine. Responsible breeders do not allow their puppies to be sold to the highest bidder – any reputable breeder will tell you that.  Even the American Kennel Club discourages the practice, stating “The American Kennel Club considers auctions and raffles not to be reasonable and appropriate methods to obtain or transfer dogs."  But this puppy isn’t AKC registered.  Instead it is, according to the Chamber’s email promoting the items to be auctioned, “able to be...
