HB 3450: Companion Animal Protection Act: Be careful what you wish for

HB 3450: Companion Animal Protection Act: Be careful what you wish for

My mother used to say, "Be careful what you wish for."  Experience had taught her that even the best of intentions sometimes resulted in unexpected consequences.  That’s the case with the Companion Animal Protection Act introduced in the Texas Legislature last month. In Dallas alone, 30,000 homeless animals were admitted to the City shelter last year.  Each day, between 75 and 100 new animals arrive.  There are 700 dog kennels, 90 cat kennels, and 135 employees.   Dallas Animal Services is open for adoption 7 days a week and they do off-site adoptions on weekends as well.  The City of Dallas even has a free spay/neuter fund for low-income residents.  Strays and impounded animals with no identification are held three days.  Animals with identification are held 7- 10 days.  Even so, over 23,000 dogs and cats were euthanized last year because there are too many irresponsible pet owners, not enough...

Think you don’t have a say in animal welfare issues in the City of Dallas?  You can, and here’s how: Sunday, April 10th, Metroplex Animal Coalition will play host to Dallas’ four mayoral candidates as they participate in a forum on animal issues in the City of Dallas.  The forum will take place at 2 p.m. at the Central (downtown) Dallas Library.  Local journalist Larry Powell (www.ReadLarryPowell.com, Urban Animal magazine) will moderate the forum.  Admission is free. Dallas’ four mayoral candidates are former Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle, Councilman Ron Natinsky, real estate consultant Edward Okpa, and Mike Rawlings, former Pizza Hut CEO and Dallas Homeless Czar.  If you love animals and you live in Dallas, this is a do-not-miss event.  With four candidates in the running, some with overlapping platforms, you need to know which ones support animal welfare and which will make Dallas Animal Services a priority. ...

Help stop puppy mills in Texas. Dine out on Wednesday at iFratelli in Las Colinas and THLN benefits.

This Wednesday, March 30th, iFratelli Restaurant in Las Colinas will donate 20% of all food and drink orders after 6 p.m. (even takeout orders!) to the Texas Humane Legislation Network.  All you have to do is mention THLN to your server. Texas Humane Legislation Network is raising money to help with their efforts to get HB 1451 passed.  Introduced in February by Rep. Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston, HB 1451, also known as the “Large Scale Commercial Breeder Bill” – or the “Puppy Mill Bill” – would establish animal welfare standards for commercial breeders with 11 or more adult female dogs or cats bred for the purpose of selling their offspring.  Texas currently has no laws regulating commercial breeding operations. According to the THLN website, “The pet overpopulation problem will only get worse if puppy mills thrive. While thousands of dogs are destroyed in animal control facilities throughout Texas each year,...

Hostage situation continues in Texas legislature: Much needed spay/neuter money still not released

Do you have one of Texas’ pet-friendly license plates?  The ones with the cute puppy & kitty.  The ones that cost you $30 extra each year?  According to the Texas Department of Transportation website, “From the $30 specialty plate fee, $22 goes to the Texas Department of State Health Services to make grants to eligible organizations that sterilize animals owned by the general public at minimal or no cost.” Good cause, cute plate, what could possibly be wrong with that?   The money raised is specifically designated for spay/neuter, right?  Well, yes, that’s what the Department of Motor Vehicles website says, and there’s an estimated $1.6 million in the animal friendly fund- all from animal lovers like you who bought the plates in an effort to support spaying and neutering of pets and reduce the number of homeless, unwanted animals in our communities.  According to the law, that money cannot...

Makeover videos transform once-neglected shelter pets into film stars

Jaime Anderson has volunteered for different rescues over the years, and has seen many homeless dogs get overlooked for adoption just because they were scruffy and in need of a haircut.    She’s got a dog of her own with high maintenance fur – one she says would look like he had suffered from years of neglect if he was "out on the street" for more than a few minutes.  So Jaime created Shelter Chic -  an on-going series of videos designed to show people that just because a homeless dog is shaggy  is no reason not to give them a chance.  Shelter Chic takes overlooked shelter dogs and transforms them.   Jaime and her camera crew visit local shelters and rescue groups looking for the perfect candidate.  Professional groomers donate their time bathing, trimming, and primping.  The lucky pups get a complete makeover designed to let their outer beauty shine...

Finally an alternative to Canton’s Dog Alley

Finally an alternative to Canton’s Dog Alley

For years, animal rescuers have pressured Canton, Texas city officials to stop the sale of live animals at First Monday Trade Days.  Reports of substandard conditions and unscrupulous vendors in “Dog Alley” abound on the Internet – even USA Today did a feature story on animal advocates’ concerns in 2009.  But money talks and the City of Canton makes a lot of money on Dog Alley and First Monday.  So now rescue groups and shelters are trying something different.  They’re coming together for Petapalooza!  Cheri Fults of Recylced Poms & Schipperkes describes the event as “an alternative to buying expensive and often unhealthy puppy mill puppies”.   Petapalooza! will take place in downtown Ben Wheeler, located off  Highway 64 about 15 miles southeast of Canton, and will feature hundreds of adoptable mixed and purebred puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats.  It runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March...

Good Samaritan, TXDOT and Arlington shelter team up to save German Shepherd mix hit by car

No one knows how darling Dot ended up getting hit by a car at 360 and Pioneer Parkway in Arlington last month, but it was there she first caught the eye of a couple of Guardian Angels who are on a mission to change her life – for the better. Two calls came in to Arlington’s shelter that morning – one from a Good Samaritan named Lori, and the other from Paula at the Texas Department of Transportation.  Both women reported a pretty German Shepherd mix had been hit by a car.  It took a bit of teamwork, but eventually a TxDOT crew and an Arlington Animal Services officer were able to find the injured dog and get her to the safety of the shelter.  There it was determined that Dot’s hip was out of place and a complicated surgery would be required.  City shelters do the best they...
