February 17th is Texas Humane Lobby Day

Texas Humane Legislation Network, the Humane Society of the United States, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will hold a workshop on effective lobbying techniques at the State Capitol in Austin.  Billed as a “chance to meet with your state legislators and let them know that Texans care about animals” by THLN, animal advocates from across Texas are invited to attend.  A briefing will be provided with tips for lobbying, and an overview of pending animal legislation, including a bill to eliminate puppy mills in Texas.  “Banning puppy mill operations in Texas is the only effective way of ending the cruelty and suffering of the thousands of animals that are being forced to live in substandard environments only to be bred for profit”, according to Sharon Sleighter of Legacy Boxer Rescue.  “As the President of a purebreed rescue organization in Texas, I can...

No more disposable pets. PLEASE!

No more disposable pets. PLEASE!

Last month it was three kittens taped in a box and left to die in the woods near White Rock Lake.  Those kittens were saved by an animal-loving couple who decided to investigate when their two dogs showed intense interest in what they thought was an empty box.  This week it’s a little bitty pup with big ears taped into a box and left out with the garbage.  Literally.  He’s only alive today because the sanitation workers heard him bark when they picked the box up to throw it in the back of their truck – where he’d have been crushed to death.  The kittens, shown below, were fortunate enough to fall into the hands of an extraordinary local rescuer and with a little help from her friends, they’re now available for adoption through Take Me Home Pet Rescue. The little dog, named Jack Frost by the Denton Animal...

Help pass laws that protect pets in Texas

Ready to put an end to puppy mills?  Worried that victims of domestic violence are being forced to leave their pets behind?  Want to know more about the rumors that breed bans are coming to Texas? Now is the time to get involved.   The Texas Humane Legislation Network’s North Texas Chapter is hosting a meeting this Sunday, December 19th and everyone is invited.  The event will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the SPCA of Texas’ Lone Star Campus.  THLN representatives will discuss the many animal protection bills expected to be introduced during the 2011 Legislative Session, including the large-scale commercial breeder bill.  Did you know that in 2009 more than 3000 abused and sick animals were rescued from mills in Texas?  Did you know that just last month, Missouri – formerly the puppy mill capitol of the nation – became the 33rd state to pass...

Local group raising fund to bring Christmas to city shelter

Dallas Animal Advocates wants to make Christmas very merry for the homeless dogs and cats at Dallas Animal Services and they need your help.  Donations are now being collected to buy beds, throws and toys for the cats and new beds for the dogs. The rectangular cat beds will provide comfort for the cats in the Adoption area. The flannel throws will be perfect for keeping the cats in Lost & Found warm, and the Perla dog beds are elevated to keep them dry and are easy to clean. The goal is to raise over $ 2,000 in private donations between now and Christmas.  Donations can be made online at Dallas Animal Advocates, just look for the “DAS Critters & Staff Compassion Support” designation on the DONATE page. Petco, local education group, team up to provide early Christmas present for shelter cats

Petco, local education group, team up to provide early Christmas present for shelter cats

Until last week, the 7,500+ cats impounded by Dallas Animal Services each year were housed in stainless steel cages in the Lost & Found area.  The cages were lined with newspaper and the cats were provided with only a food bowl, water bowl, and a plastic litter box. Stress levels were high because the cats had no place to hide.  With the City of Dallas experiencing a significant drop in tax revenue and fighting to hold the line on essential City services, chances of the cat’s situation improving any time soon were slim.  But last week, Christmas came early when Companions for Life, with financing from the Petco Foundation, presented 92 brand new feral cat dens to Dallas Animal Services – one for each of the lost cat kennels. The feral cat dens (photos above left and below) will serve as cozy, secure hiding spots for frightened, lost, and...

SPCA issues Halloween safety tips for cats

SPCA issues Halloween safety tips for cats

Animal rescue groups and shelters across the nation are reminding cat owners that they need to take extra care to keep their cats safe this Halloween.  The SPCA of Texas provided these tips: Never give any candy to your cat! Even a small amount of chocolate can be fatal.  Make sure that all Halloween treats are in a high place where cats cannot reach them. Keep cats away from live flame decorations like candles and jack-o-lanterns, and restrict your cat’s access to hanging decorations such as streamers.  Cats can easily singe ears and tails on open flames, and decorations can cause choking, or worse – serious and sometimes fatal intestinal complications. Myths regarding cats and witches can put them in danger on Halloween.  For peace of mind, keep kitties safely at home this season. Cats may be terrified by tiny gremlins carrying big, orange, pumpkins full of sugar… wouldn’t...

ASPCA study of shelter cats asks "feral or frightened"?

ASPCA study of shelter cats asks "feral or frightened"?

Shelters and rescue groups routinely assess cats and kittens to determine whether or not they are good candidates for adoption.  But it can be very difficult, when dealing with badly frightened cats in an unfamiliar environment, to know whether or not a newly arrived cat is an unadoptable, unsocialized feral cat, or just a badly frightened lost pet. Carefully assessing frightened cats in shelters is critical because cats that are determined to be truly feral have very few options.  The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals‘ "Behaviors that Distinguish Unsocialized from Socialized Cats" research study surveyed 555 organizations including private shelters, TNR programs, rescue groups, spay/neuter clinics, animal control agencies, and foster programs.  They found that more than 40% of the organizations studied have only one option for feral cats – euthanasia – while others either spay or neuter feral cats and return them to their original...

And it requires shelters to keep records, post their adoption, intake and euthanasia stats online, be open nights and weekends so people who work 9-5 can adopt, and mandates vaccinations and vet care.  Read more from WHYY.org.   X-Man is available for adoption from Dallas Animal Services.
