Dallas Animal Services to waive adoption fees this weekend

It’s spring in Texas and Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is bursting at the seams. DAS has taken in more than 100 pets of varying ages each day this week, and will continue to do so through the summer months. Thus, the department is asking for the community’s support. “To save as many animals as possible, DAS will waive adoption fees this weekend for all dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that have been at the Adoption Center for 14 days or more,” said DAS Manager Jody Jones.  Each adoption includes spay or neuter surgery, appropriate vaccinations and microchip – a $200 value. The offer is good until 5 p.m. Sunday, May 19. If the pet has been here less than 14 days, the adoption fee for dogs over 30 pounds and cats over 6 months of age is $30. Cate McManus, DAS Operations Manager, urged people to try to find...

ASPCA, HSNT and DAS assist FBI and US Attorney’s office in federal dog fighting raid

At the request of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the United States Attorney’s Office, the ASPCA assisted in a multi-state, federal dog fighting raid in Missouri, Kansas and Texas this past weekend. The ASPCA managed the removal and transport of nearly 100 dogs involved in the investigation, and is overseeing forensic evidence collection, as well as the dogs’ veterinary care and sheltering. Agencies assisting the ASPCA with the operation include the Humane Society of North Texas and Dallas Animal Services as well as Wayside Waifs of Kansas City, Missouri, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Nebraska Humane Society, Sumter (Florida) Disaster Animal Response Team, and Great Plains SPCA of Kansas. A search warrant was executed Saturday night in Kansas, after the FBI raided a location suspected of holding a contract dog fight in north Texas. The ASPCA and other agencies assisted in the seizure...

MAC and Dallas Animal Adovcates merge with Dallas Companion Animal Project creating one large, powerful organization determined to make Dallas a “No Kill” Community

Three Dallas animal welfare groups are joining forces for the good of companion animals and their owners. Dallas Animal Advocates, the Dallas Companion Animal Project and the Metroplex Animal Coalition will now work under the same nonprofit umbrella: the Dallas Companion Animal Project (DCAP). The project began in July 2011 as the official task force appointed by the City to guide the community toward increasing programs to end the killing of adoptable animals. The programs that all three groups have begun will continue largely as before, under the same leadership. Virtually all of the members of the boards of the former organization have signed as to serve as volunteers or as advisory members, signifying a hearty endorsement of the new organization. The team who will serve on the board of directors of the new organization initially will be: •    Chris Watts, President •    Maeleska Fletes, Vice President/Secretary •    Susan...

Collin County veterinarian convicted of animal cruelty

Collin County veterinarian convicted of animal cruelty

Last Thursday, after a week-long trial, a jury found Collin County veterinarian  Janine Joyce Charboneau-McInnis guilty of animal cruelty after Collin County investigators found more than 40 neglected and cruelly confined dogs on her property in Lucas in November of 2011.  Photos provided by investigators showed most of the dogs were living in tiny wire cages in a dark shed on her property, while others lived in trash cans and plastic totes; still more were found in small plastic kennels inside her home. The floors of the shed were covered in feces and urine. Photos show most of the dogs were living in their own filth, and there was no food or fresh water available at the time of the seizure.  Many of the dogs were covered in fleas and matted, and some had ear infections and others eye discharge. According to witnesses at the trial, the defendant claimed...

Federal Court Refuses to Block New Texas Puppy Mill Law

Federal Court Refuses to Block New Texas Puppy Mill Law

Breaking news from HSUS:  A federal court in Austin Texas heard arguments and then rejected a motion by certain disgruntled commercial dog breeders to block the state’s new puppy mill law from going into effect. The Humane Society of the United States and Texas Humane Legislation Network filed an amicus brief asking the court to uphold the law, which was also vigorously defended by the Texas Attorney General’s Office. The new law instructs the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to inspect and license large-scale commercial pet breeders with 11 or more breeding female dogs or cats and who sell 20 or more puppies or kittens each year. The Court found that the new law was within the power of the state legislature to endure humane treatment of animals, and does not violate constitutional rights of dog breeders challenging the law. Similar challenges have been brought in other states,...

Raccoons & Distemper – what you need to know

January 31, 2013

From Dallas Animal Services in response to the WFAA story last night “Pet owners warned after distemper outbreak in raccoons“: Diseases are cyclical and outbreaks in wildlife occur from time to time. It’s not that unusual and humans and cats are not at risk. But there are things that we can all do to minimize the impact on wildlife, and the potential danger to your dog(s). First, all pets need to be vaccinated. Vaccines are very effective and low cost options are available. Second, do not leave pet food out at night and be sure to keep trash cans securely closed. Disease spreads rapidly among raccoons that come to one spot to eat. Also, please keep in mind that distemper is not a hardy virus and does not survive long in the environment. If you have any questions, please visit: Dallas Animal Services on Facebook 911 Wildlife Copyright Rebecca...

Duck Team 6 asks public’s help to find Lucy, dog missing since 12/21

Duck Team 6 is asking for the public’s help finding a missing foster dog.  Lucy was rescued by Duck Team 6 the first of November. In the 6 weeks since they pulled her off the streets, she first had emergency surgery for a prolapsed uterus, then surgery to be spayed a few days later and then yet another complication – a prolapsed bladder – required a third surgery. Through it all, she was an absolute sweetheart. But on December 21st, she was being moved into a car to be transported and she got spooked and ran off. The incident occurred in the Uptown area near Fitzhugh and Travis. At the time, Lucy was nearly finished with her recovery and had just become available for adoption. A $500 reward is being offered for her safe return. Possible sightings have occurred in the Highland Park area, as well as in the...

Dallas DA announces formation of new Animal Cruelty Unit

The animal welfare community is celebrating today after Dallas County ADA David Alex, in an interview with CBS 11 reporter Sharrie Williams, yesterday confirmed the creation of a special unit within the District Attorney’s office to prosecute animal cruelty cases. Dallas Animal Services Division Manager Jody Jones has been working with the DA’s office to find ways to better prosecute these cases since she arrived in Dallas just over a year ago, and this is a huge step forward in that effort. Jones, a faculty member of the Animal Cruelty Advisory Council of the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, an organization comprised of the nation’s top animal cruelty investigators and prosecutors, spoke just last month at the National Animal Cruelty Prosecution Conference.  The conference is designed to educate prosecutors, veterinarians, and law enforcement about the tools and resources available for investigating and prosecuting cruelty cases and the importance of recognizing...

Local advocates step up for dozens of abandoned Maltese and King Charles Spaniels

Updated October 7, 2012, 5:49 p.m. On October 1, 51 dogs were found on the roadside in west Flower Mound.  Most were adult Maltese and Maltese mixes.  Two nights later, 41 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were found on a roadside in northern Denton County. All the dogs found were in poor condition and matted with feces and urine, and some have medical conditions that need to be treated.  “These dogs likely came from a puppy mill, which is why the Licensed Breeder Act that went into effect on September 1 is so important” said Stacy Smith, VP of Animal Advocacy for the Humane Society of Flower Mound.  “If properly enforced, we should never see dogs in this condition in Texas.  The condition of these dogs and the callous manner in which they were dumped shows the inherent cruelty in this industry. If people take one lesson away from this,...
