Thousands of dogs die in hot cars each year. Don’t let it happen to yours.

Photo: Rebecca Poling Friday in Southern California a woman left 18 dogs in a parked van intending to be gone only a few minutes. But apparently her errand took longer than expected. When animal control authorities were called an hour later, the temperature in the van was 100 degrees. The dogs were alive, but many were in obvious distress. The temperature that day was only 76 degrees. Saturday in Texas we hit 100 degrees for the first time this year. When it is this hot, it takes less than ten minutes for the inside of a car to reach 120 degrees, even with the windows cracked. A dog can suffer brain damage at 107 and die at 120. Even in the morning when it’s cooler, the temperature in your car can increase 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. No matter how much your dog loves to go along when...

Rescued: 85 cats and 6 dogs saved by HSNT (slideshow and video)

Wood Co. kitten, Photo: Humane Society of North Texas On Friday, the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT), working in conjunction with the Wood County Sheriff’s department, rescued 85 cats and kittens and 6 dogs from a rural Wood County home. Reports indicate that neighbors had been complaining about the large number of animals and the foul odor for months. The Wood County Sheriff had been working with the residents to try to rectify the situation but was unable to do so and HSNT was called in. Investigators found 65 cats and 6 dogs inside the double-wide mobile home, where the smell of ammonia permeated the air. Ammonia levels were so high they were toxic not just to the animals, but to the residents as well. Another 20 cats were found outside the home. Almost all of the cats are sick. The staff at the Humane Society of North...

Unleashed, popular indoor dog park and supporter of animal rescue to close June 13th

Unleashed, the wildly popular, first-of-its-kind indoor dog park announced today that they will close at the end of business on Sunday, June 13th. In a press released issued this afternoon, Unleashed owners cite the recent tough economy, combined with a need to revise the original concept from a single location to satellite locations across the City, as the motivating factors behind the closure. Plans are to enlist some private investors and then relaunch a revised version of Unleashed within the next year. Prepaid daycare and park packages must be used up by the 13th, and everything in the retail supply center is now discounted as much as 75% off. Training classes will continue until completion and Power to the PawZ Pet Services & Education will take over existing boarding reservations by providing in-home pet sitting. Unleashed, a state-of-the-art 50,000 square foot facility with spacious play parks for dogs and...

Urgent! Pets need to eat and the food bank is empty!

Graphic courtesy Don’t Forget To Feed Me Don’t Forget To Feed Me, the only pet food bank in North Texas, has run out of food just as summer break is about to begin. According to DFTFM Chair Terry Woodfin, “The need for donations becomes even more urgent during the summer, since we know many children who depend on the school lunch program will be at home. This creates even more pressure to adequately feed all members of the family, so family members will not share their own scarce food with their pets.“ Don’t Forget to Feed Me provides pet food to the economically disadvantaged in 13 North Texas counties. Many of their recipients are disabled and would be forced to give up their pet without the food bank’s help. Russell Feed will be holding a fundraising campaign for Don’t Forget to Feed Me at their vaccination clinics during the entire...

Dallas Animal Services in urgent need of newspapers for homeless pets!

Dallas Animal Services needs your discarded newspapers to provide comfort for the cats and other critters in their care. Without donated newspapers, the stray, homeless and often frightened animals must sit directly on the cold, stainless steel cages. Dallas Animal Services goes through a lot of newspaper each day and lately the demand has simply outpaced the supply. And in addition to daily use, Dallas Animal Services’ staff members like to keep a stash of newspapers on hand in case of a hoarding or cock-fighting bust where a large number of animals suddenly need shelter and care. Donating newspapers is an easy, cost-free way anyone can help homeless pets. You can drop off your discarded papers directly at Dallas Animal Services, 1818 N. Westmoreland (I-30 at Westmoreland), Dallas, Texas, or at the Metroplex Mutts adoption event on Saturday, 5/22. The event is this Saturday at the Pet Supplies Plus...

SCA needs crates to keep saving dogs from DAS!

Thanks to the Society for Companion Animals (SCA), every other week, a few lucky dogs who are facing euthanasia at Dallas Animal Services are flown to safety in Spokane, Washington and quickly adopted.  SCA picks up the dogs at Dallas Animal Services, fosters them overnight, transports them to DFW before dawn, and then pays for the dogs to be flown to Spokane where SpokAnimal C.A.R.E. volunteers meet them. Within days they are settling into loving, adoptive homes. The City of Dallas shelter takes in more than 30,000 dogs and cats each year.  Only about 2,500 are lucky enough to get adopted.  Another 2,500 are reclaimed by owners or transferred to rescue groups. The remaining 25,000+ unwanted animals are euthanized each year to make room for more.  Many are highly adoptable mixed breed dogs, purebreds, and puppies.  Right now, there are 24 dogs on the urgent list at Dallas Animal...

PetsMart and Fort Worth Animal Services making history with new adoption center

Mickey, photo courtesy Fort Worth Animal Care & Control For the first time in its history, Fort Worth Animal Care & Control has stopped euthanizing homeless animals. They simply don’t have to, thanks to a new partnership between the City of Fort Worth and PetSmart Charities, Inc. In the last three weeks, 200 homeless animals have been adopted from a brand new satellite adoption center inside the South Hulen Street PetSmart. The first of its kind in the nation, the new 1,830 square foot city-run adoption center includes 10 full-size kennels for adult dogs, 4 kennels for small dogs or puppies, a cat adoption center that can house up to 24 cats, a play area for dogs waiting to be adopted, and get acquainted areas where potential adopters can visit with individual pets. Costs to remodel a back portion of the store into an adoption facility were paid for...
