Facebook for cats: Catmoji

Love cats?  Can’t get enough of social networking?  Catmoji might be the answer.  Created by a self-described geeky programmer and a funky designer, Catmoji has set out to make the Internet a better and happier place with cats. Who can argue with that? Even if you’re like me, and up to your eyeballs in social media, it’s worth a look.  Very cute stuff.  But be  fore-warned, it can be addictive, and if you want to join in the fun, you’ll need an invitation from an existing user, or you can email Catmoji and eventually they’ll get it to you. Movie producers scouring shelters and using Facebook to find Benji look-alike

Movie producers scouring shelters and using Facebook to find Benji look-alike

It’s hard to believe that it has been 38 years since the original “Benji” move debuted in 1974. Now Walden Media (the Chronicles of Narnia series) is teaming up with writer-director-producer Brandon Camp (Love Happens) on a contemporary reboot of the wildly successful film franchise, and they are using Facebook to help cast a leading mutt to star in the movie’s title role. Did you know the original Benji was “discovered” in a shelter in California? So in addition to the Facebook search, the filmmakers will also be scouring animal shelters, as well as traditional animal talent agencies and trainers for dogs that have the looks, onscreen charisma and ability to take direction required to step into the film’s starring role. Director Brandon Camp and renowned Animal Trainer Mark Forbes have been searching high and low for just the right dog.  “Brandon and I attended the Best Friends Animal...

BlogPaws 2011: The Place for Pets

BlogPaws, the popular 3-day conference for pet bloggers was held last weekend in Tyson’s Corner, VA, just outside Washington, D.C.  It featured 28 workshops, a day-long special session, 3 keynote speakers, a sneak preview of Spooky Buddies, and lots of networking opportunities.  More on all that later.  For now, let’s start with the important stuff – the pets. When you get a couple hundred pet bloggers together and tell them “pets are welcome”, you get a lot of pets.  Check out some of these cool canines, fearless felines, ferrets, flat pets, and more: T.K. was the first pet friend we met.  Here he is waiting for the elevator, and then later at lunch wondering what all the hub-ub was about. We ran into this pretty boy in a couple of workshops.  What great manners he had.  Never said a word. This is Ernie.  He proudly represented Pit Bulls at...

Passionate about black cats? Today is Black Cat Appreciation Day!

Passionate about black cats? Today is Black Cat Appreciation Day!

Black cats have gotten a bad rap throughout history, being associated with witches, bad luck, and the devil himself.  They’re also hard to photograph and easily over-looked in a shelter full of tabbies, torties, and everything in between.   All of which likely contributes to black cats in shelters having the lowest adoption rates and the highest euthanasia rates. But black cat lovers are passionate about their pets, and they decided to do something about it.  They got together on Facebook and created Black Cat Appreciation Day, August 17, 2011.  According to the founder, “I came up with this idea in the hope that opinions could be changed and the Black Cat would be a welcome addition in everyone’s home!” I can attest to just how amazing black cats are, having several that share my home.  They’re out-going, affectionate, and full of personality.  They’re laid-back, social, and sophisticated.  And they’re...

Local rescuer makes her TV debut on Bravo’s “Most Eligible Dallas”

Tara Harper, President and co-founder of Paws In The City, made her TV debut last night on Bravo’s new reality series, "Most Eligible Dallas".  The show follows a group of six young, successful, Dallasites who are “living it up” Texas style.  The first episode focused quite a bit of time on Tara and her work with the non-profit, all-volunteer organization that transfers homeless pets from Dallas Animal Services who are in danger of being euthanized, or the injured or ill who need more intensive care than a city shelter can provide. Camera crews followed Tara as she visited the shelter, chatted with the employees, petted and comforted the animals, and chose the five she would take with her, then followed her back home where she helped prepare home-made meals for them.  Most of the show was garden-variety reality TV, and some of the characters were portrayed as less than...

Compassion – the new radicalism

I read this on the signature line of an email I received yesterday and haven’t been able to get it out of my head – so I thought I’d share it:  “Compassion is the radicalism of our time.” – Dalai Lama That is very true.  Society is changing, and in a positive way.  Skeptical?  Check out one of my all-time favorite articles from Animal Sheltering Magazine:  “Out of Control and Into Compassion”, by Carrie Allan, from July/August 2009.   Photo courtesy Rebecca Kornblum Copyright Rebecca Poling 2011.  All rights reserved.  Email DFWAnimalRescue@att.net if you have a story you’d like to share. del.icio.us Tags: Dalai Lama, compassion, animal control, animl sheltering
