Rescue Kitty: A story of love, faith and kindness

Rescue Kitty: A story of love, faith and kindness

On Saturday, June 25th, someone abandoned a small, sweet, flame point Siamese mix in the night drop at Dallas Animal Services.  She was friendly, but also understandably nervous.  She was also paralyzed from the waist down.  The caregivers at the shelter did their best to make her comfortable, but because of her injuries, she was scheduled to be euthanized after the requisite 72-hours if no owner came forward.  Molly DeVoss, a long-time Dallas Animal Services volunteer, first saw the kitty on Sunday – the day after she was abandoned.  Molly’s seen a lot of cats come and go through the shelter, which handles nearly 9,000 stray and unwanted cats each year, but something about this particular cat caught Molly’s eye. “She was panicked” Molly said.  “She’d turned her water over and couldn’t get off the wet paper lining her cage.  When I opened her cage to change it out...

Feel good Friday: A reader sends a Thank You to a local animal control officer who went the extra mile.

Feel good Friday: A reader sends a Thank You to a local animal control officer who went the extra mile.

Every once in a while someone sends in an animal rescue story they’d like to share, and when I can I try to oblige.  A few weeks ago I got just such an email from someone who’d read an article I’d written some time back about the little Ferris animal shelter.  The stories were critical of the way the shelter was being run.  I gather from the City’s website, which barely acknowledges they have a shelter and showcases note one single adoptable animal, that not much has changed (although if you have an update, please let me know). Regardless, I want to share with you this email that points out something I think we sometimes forget:   There are some really good people who work at some really bad shelters, and they don’t do it because they condone what is happening, but because they care and they want to make...

"There’ll be days like this," my mama said…

March 6, 2011

I was enjoying a nice, relaxing Saturday afternoon until one of the Big Black Cats jumped up on my desk – mouth open, drooling, tongue hanging out looking, kind of, well – rabid. He let me actually wipe the drool off his mouth and I knew something was wrong. What self-respecting member of the Black Cat Coalition would allow anyone to wipe drool? Clearly this was an emergency, so off to the emergency clinic we went. It must have been a slow day, because they were waiting for me at the door. Filling out paperwork is never as hard as it is at the emergency clinic. I couldn’t even remember what day it was. But apparently, they’re used to that. I didn’t wait long – within 5 minutes the vet was back with the news: a loose canine caused by an abcess had gotten lodged sideways in Slick’s mouth....

Molly & Jack – a badly overdue update

Molly & Jack – a badly overdue update

Molly & Jack are safe.  If you’ve been following their story, you know that the two blind Catahoula leopard dogs were surrendered to the City of Corsicana shelter back in August, most likely the victims of a breeder trying to breed two dogs with splotched, or “merle” coloring.  Knowledgeable breeders know that breeding two dogs with merle coloring can result in puppies that are blind, deaf, or both, but inexperienced, backyard breeders continue to do it.  In Molly & Jack’s case, they can both hear, but Molly is partly blind and Jack is almost completely blind.  Despite their rocky start, the two siblings have apparently adapted well to their disability – often walking shoulder to shoulder to help each other find their way.  In September, the Humane Society of North Texas came to Molly & Jack’s rescue, transferring them from the Corsicana shelter to a warm, comfortable, high visibility...

The Top 10 Animal Rescue stories of 2010 – plus one very significant milestone.

2010 saw some amazing animal rescue stories, from a single dog who eluded rescuers for months and wound up in the middle of a dispute between animal lovers and the pastor of a local church, to the final chapter in the saga of 27,000 exotic animals rescued from U.S. Global Exotics.  This year more than ever before, we saw individuals, groups, and entire communities come together to help out, to support each other, and to embrace their local shelters. So here is our list of the Top 10 (plus one important milestone) for 2010.  Please take a moment to share your thoughts in the comments, and have a safe and Happy New Year! On January 30th, nearly five months after the seizure of 27,000 exotic animals, U.S. Global Exotics lost their appeal and the custody of the animals was permanently awarded to the City of Arlington.  A few months...

Lost cat reunited with family after nearly a year – just in time for Christmas

Lost cat reunited with family after nearly a year – just in time for Christmas

This heartwarming tale of a long-last cat being reunited with its family comes to us just in time to share it with you for Christmas. In April of 2010, New Beginnings Cat Rescue in Garland, Texas, took in a friendly black and white cat from the local animal shelter.  Like so many of the cats they get from area shelters, they knew almost nothing about her – only that someone had turned her in, she was out of time, and they were her last hope.  They named her ‘Blue Bell’ after one of their volunteer’s beloved cats, and within weeks of her arrival, she was adopted by a wonderful couple from Little Elm, Texas, willing to give her a safe, permanent home. But in November, Blue Bell’s family made a tough decision.  As much as they loved Blue Bell, but she had never completely adjusted to being around their...

Church dog gets a new lease on life from an old friend – and just in time for Christmas

Many of you probably remember the story of Jack, the stray dog who lived behind a local church for months while rescuers and animal services officers tried to catch him and get him help.   The neighbors fed him and did their best to keep him safe, but the church pastor threatened to shoot Jack claiming he was aggressive to parishioners – a claim no one in the congregation ever substantiated.  Eventually, amid the public outcry, pressure from the Dallas police, and the threat of a Sunday morning protest by rescuers, the Pastor backed down. It was four weeks later when a small but dedicated team of rescuers finally managed to nab Jack.  He was taken to Operation Kindness where he was given a bath, medical attention, a warm, soft bed and plenty to eat.   Over the last few months, Jack has been treated for heartworms, received extensive socialization and...

A personal story of a community effort to give a mamma cat and her newborn kittens a Happy Ending

A personal story of a community effort to give a mamma cat and her newborn kittens a Happy Ending

You win some, you lose some, and some you win in totally unexpected ways.  That was the case with a young mamma cat I recently crossed paths with.  She’d been abandoned in late October outside a Dallas vet’s office.  The note attached to the carrier read "My kitty is pregnant and I can’t keep her. Please help her".  The veterinarians couldn’t keep her, so she was taken to Dallas Animal Services where they fed her and made her as comfortable as possible.  The very next day she gave birth to five tiny kittens.  Knowing the busy shelter was no place for a young mom and newborn kittens, the animal control officers at DAS put out a plea to local rescuers to see if anyone could help.  Elizabeth Bell of Southern Animal Foundation saw her photo (above) on Facebook and immediately fell for her.  Already bursting at the seams with...

Kittens are great but older kitties have soooo much going for them. HSBV, you were...

Happy Ending: 47 Arabians on their way to new homes after Collin County auction

Photo courtesy Laurel Arabians After several delays and last-minute appeals by Living Waters Arabians, the court-ordered auction of 47 purebred Arabian horses seized last month by the Collin County Sheriff took place this past Saturday.  Authorities indicated the horses – 22 stallions and 25 mares – were found starving and malnourished at the Living Waters Arabians facility in Farmersville on June 9th and were subsequently placed in the custody of Collin County Animal Services.  At a hearing on June 24th, a judge ordered an auction be held and the horses sold at auction to qualified buyers. Meyers Park in McKinney was the setting for the auction.  More than 100 people came to bid on the horses and in doing so created the fairy tale endings these proud but neglected animals deserved. Lisa Henry, from Legacy Ranch in Terrell rescued a colt six years ago from a cruelty seizure.  On...
