HSUS launches “Rescue Central” an online resource for rescue groups

Last week the Humane Society of the United States launched a brand-new resource, Rescue Central, a division of AnimalSheltering.org.  The new site is designed to provide all the information rescue groups need to run the most effective and humane rescue organization possible. Talk about impeccable timing.  Animalsheltering.org website has long been a reliable source for animal shelter staff looking for information on best practices in a variety of areas, and now rescue groups will be able to benefit from HSUS’ expertise as well. From the latest money saving tips to expert advice on recruiting and retaining foster homes, the new Rescue Central section of animalsheltering.org has it all. To help you navigate this new section, it is divided it into four segments: Business of Saving Lives, Rescuing Done Right, Show Me the Money, and Building Solid Relationships. To run a successful rescue, you need more than just animal smarts—you...

Texas Unites wrap up – It was a Success!

Texas Unites wrap up – It was a Success!

It’s been a long time since I’ve written and I apologize. I’ve been “wearing another hat” as Jim Tedford would say – coordinating the Texas Unites for Animals Conference in Austin. Hosted by the Texas Animal Shelter Coalition and the Texas Federation of Humane Societies, and coordinated by yours truly, we brought together 377 animal care and sheltering professionals – rescuers, shelter staff, veterinarians, advocates, animal control officers, managers, directors, and so much more – from across the country (and Canada!).  42 of the best minds in the industry presented 49 workshops in six tracks – management, communication, operations, animals, adoptions, and veterinary care – plus the keynote session.  Attendees earned CEU credits from TSDHS, SAWA, TVMA, TBVME, LBVME, and more. We filled the exhibit hall with 47 vendors including PetSmart Charities, Petfinder.com, Petco Foundation, ASPCA, TACA, THLN, TCAAP, Latham Foundation, Pet Point, Chameleon, Shelter Buddy, and many, many,...

PetSmart Charities Webinar and Mentoring: Mega Adoption Events

PetSmart Charities Webinar and Mentoring: Mega Adoption Events

A webinar (short for Web-based Seminar) is simply a workshop transmitted over the Web. It’s a great way to learn new things, it’s  fun, free, and you don’t even have to leave your home – or office. All you need is a phone and a computer. Unlike a webcast, which is a one-way broadcast in which the speaker has limited ability to interact with the audience, webinars are collaborative events that include polling and question & answer sessions, allowing full participation between the audience and the presenter. PetSmart Charities offers a great series of webinars, and just recently announced a new one, “Mega Adoption Event Mentoring”.  It’s presented by Heather Herrera, Central Oklahoma Humane Society’s Mega Adoption Event Coordinator and Amy Shrodes, Central Oklahoma Humane Society’s Manager of Development. Here’s the workshop description: “PetSmart Charities® and Central Oklahoma Humane Society are teaming up to shed a new light on...

Rescue groups are invited to join a new, national spay/neuter awareness campaign

Rescue groups are invited to join a new, national spay/neuter awareness campaign

Animal rescue groups across the country are being invited to join a national alliance of animal welfare organizations committed to spreading the word about spay/neuter. National Spay Neuter Awareness believes spay/neuter has to be a big part of any solution to the pet overpopulation existing in the U.S. and the resulting suffering it brings on too many animals.  A 501(c)(3) organization, NSNA will soon be undertaking a national awareness campaign about the importance of spaying and neutering our pets.  NSNA plans to focus primarily on television messages, generally presented on the upper end cable channels, aimed at audiences more likely to benefit from such a campaign. Your support of NSNA will demonstrate to the public that a substantial number of animal welfare organizations, whether local, regional, or national, support the vision of our organization.  To join, all you have to do is give us permission to include the name...

Blog Hop: Pedigree Foundation helps shelters help dogs.

Blog Hop: Pedigree Foundation helps shelters help dogs.

Have you seen the Pedigree PSA featuring the David Duchovny voice-over, “Shelter dogs aren’t broken, they just experienced more life”?  It’s probably an under-statement to call it a  tear-jerker, what with all those dramatic images of some of the saddest faces ever.  But it works, doesn’t it?  It’s short, simple, and direct.  Shelter dogs aren’t bad dogs.  They didn’t end up in shelters because they did something wrong –most wound up there through absolutely no fault of their own. It’s an important message and it’s brought to you by the Pedigree Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Pedigree.  Their mission is simple.  They’re “dedicated to helping dogs in need find loving homes.”  One way they do that is through grants to rescue groups and shelters – operations grants intended to help with basic operating costs such as adoption fees, medical care, spay/neuter, and transportation, and innovation grants that award shelters...
