3-year, $5 million Big Fix for Big D kicks off

The Big Fix for Big D was publicly launched  at a press conference this morning at St. Philip’s School and Community Center. The ground-breaking, 3-year, $5 million initiative’s goal is to reduce the high rates of euthanasia at Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center that is caused by unchecked breeding, resulting in thousands more animals than the system is able to handle. The Big Fix for Big D offers $20 spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations and registration for animals in 18 of the highest-need zip code areas of Dallas beginning June 7, 2012. Big Fix for Big D partners include Dallas Animal Services (DAS), the Kaufman County Animal Awareness Project (KCAAP), Metroplex Animal Coalition (MAC) and the SPCA of Texas.  The first year of the “Big Fix for Big D” initiative will be funded by the Companion Animal Funders Coalition, which includes the City of Dallas, The Dallas Foundation,...

Cat Care 101: The importance of Spay/Neuter

Do you have a new cat or kitten, or are you thinking about adding a furry feline to your family?  Do you know what you need to do to keep your kitty happy and healthy?  This series will examine the basic elements of proper cat care: Spay/Neuter, Vaccinations, Food, Safe Transport, Water, Litter, Scratching Post, Identification, Grooming, and Play Time.  Let’s start with the most important tip of all: Spay or Neuter your cat! If you’re adopting a cat or kitten from a shelter or rescue group, chances are it’s already spayed or neutered.  If not, it’s important that you get that done as soon as possible.  Spaying or neutering will help keep your new kitty happy and healthy, and help you avoid a long list of nuisance behaviors commonly associated with unaltered cats.  A female cat in heat can be disturbingly vocal, attract male cats, and demonstrate all...

$10/$20 Spay/Neuter surgeries now available for select Dallas residents

Kaufman County Animal Awareness Project (KCAAP) and PetSmart Charities have teamed up to provide spay/neuter surgeries  and rabies vaccinations for pets of Dallas residents living in zip codes 75217 and 75227.  The cost?  Only $10 for cats and $20 for dogs!  The goal of this very special program is to reduce the number of animals entering Dallas Animal Services from these two zip codes, increase awareness of the new spay/neuter ordinance in Dallas and get more dogs and cats registered with the City. “Targeted programs like these are the key to successful, low-cost spay/neuter in local communities. Cumulatively, they are making a huge impact on pet overpopulation nationwide” according to Susana Della Maddalena, Executive Director of PetSmart Charities. “We hope to prove that a strong sterilization program will decrease intake and euthanasia numbers at the shelter,” said Deborah Hicks, the KCAAP Program Coordinator. “In the long run, we hope...

Mazie’s Mission has a dream to help Metroplex rescue groups and animal shelters.

January 10, 2011
Mazie’s Mission has a dream to help Metroplex rescue groups and animal shelters.

A veterinary clinic just for shelters and rescue groups?  It sounds crazy, but Dr. Erin Shults and her team at Mazie’s Mission think they can make it work.  If so, the entire animal welfare community stands to benefit.  For most rescue groups, the cost of veterinary care is by far the largest item in their budget.  Spay/neuter clinics are a low-cost alternative for pet owners, but they don’t accept un-owned animals.   So foster home based groups rely on the generosity of local vets, many of whom provide special “rescue discounts” for spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, blood tests, heartworm treatment, and even urgent care for sick or injured animals.  But a for-profit vet clinic can only discount a limited amount of their fees and still stay in business.    That’s a problem Dr. Shults thinks she can avoid with a non-profit veterinary clinic just for rescues and shelters.  She’ll combine an economical...

Metroplex Animal Coalition’s "Real Men Neuter" campaign kicks off today

Graphic courtesy Metroplex Animal Coalition and Molly DeVoss Metroplex Animal Coalition’s “Real Men Neuter” awareness campaign kicks off today with the launch of a brand new ad on the back of almost 200 Dallas Area Rapid Transit buses. The campaign’s message is simple – “Spay or Neuter Your Pets. It Saves Lives. And it’s the Law“. A new voice mail line, 972-498-8800, has been set up as part of the campaign. It will provide information, in both English and Spanish, about free and low-cost spay/neuter programs in the Metroplex. “I have wanted to do this ad for 10 years since I began leading the MAC organization. It is finally a reality thanks to the generous outpouring of volunteer time, support, and funding” said Elaine Munch, President of MAC. You’ve come a long way, baby! SPCA clinic gets a makeover (see it for yourself)

Photo: Mary Spencer/SPCA of Texas The SPCA of Texas Martin Spay/Neuter Clinic and Animal Wellness Center at Village Fair recently underwent a much-needed renovation both inside and out. Those who’ve been in the area awhile may remember the building, which is located at 4830 Village Fair Drive, was originally a Red Lobster restaurant. Converted to a low-cost spay/neuter clinic in 1993, it became a part of the SPCA of Texas in 2008. But until this year the building still looked a lot like a Red Lobster. At least until The Communities Foundation gave the SPCA a $50,000 grant to get the ball rolling on a top-to-bottom renovation. Walls were knocked out, the crumbling, stained ceiling was replaced and even the air conditioning was repaired, but more still needed to be done. So Mary Spencer, president and founder of The Spencer Company, stepped in. Her firm donated a new check-in...

Help! I Need Somebody’ video helps promote awareness of the need to spay and neuter

Cookie, availble now at Cat Matchers, photo: Beth Bodden Estimates are at least 80,000 and maybe as many as 100,000 animals are euthanized in North Texas shelters each year. The sad fact is that there simply are not enough homes for them all, so no matter how much we try we can’t rescue them all. We must focus more on educating the public about the need to spay and neuter pets and we must continue to provide resources for those who want to spay/neuter their pets but can’t afford it. That’s how we’ll reduce the huge numbers of unwanted dogs and cats arriving at shelters and rescue groups each day. Alliance for Humane Action makes it easy to educate the public and promote spay/neuter with this fun and informative video. “Help, I Need Somebody” was produced for Alliance for Humane Action by Mathew Jenkins and Marian McNair. AHA provides...
