Moving toward a humane community will require more pet friendly landlords

Moving toward a humane community will require more pet friendly landlords

What’s one of the things shelters and rescuers hear all too often? I’m moving and I can’t take my pet. Pease help me find a home for it. Why? Because so many apartment complex owners simply don’t allow pets, or if they do, they limit their size and their breed. A recent study indicates only 9% of pet-friendly apartments allow pets without any significant restrictions. One of things that’s going to have to change for Dallas to become a more humane community is we’re going to have to convince more landlords to become “pet friendly”. Firepaw co-founders Dr Joshua M. Frank and Dr. Pamela Carlisle-Frank may be able to help. They created CARP, the Companion Animal Renters Program. CARP materials, available on their website at www.firepaw.org include a Tenant Information Book, a CARP for Landlords brochure, and the results of the CARP study conducted in 2005. They’ve also written...

Dallas Animal Services & Humane Society of West Texas partnership saves 100 cats and kittens in one day

Dallas Animal Services & Humane Society of West Texas partnership saves 100 cats and kittens in one day

It’s kitten season once again and Dallas Animal Services is overflowing with cats and kittens with nowhere to go.  But this past Friday, nearly 100 kittens and their moms got a second chance when the Humane Society of West Texas in Lubbock stepped in and transferred them all to the foster-home based rescue group. It was a huge undertaking, and a great example of how partner organizations can help each other save more lives.  DAS staff and rescue coordinator worked overtime Friday, processing the necessary paperwork for all 100 cats and kittens. HSWT volunteers were able to get on the road with their precious cargo late that afternoon, arriving back in Lubbock very late Friday night. They then stayed up most of the night getting everyone fed, watered, and settled in. Any way you look at it, 100 cats and kittens are a lot to care for.  If you...

Loews Resorts takes more heat in debate over feral cats

Loews Resorts takes more heat in debate over feral cats

Deborah Barnes, author of “The Chronicles of Zee and Zoey” recently conducted an exclusive interview with George Ricci, the caretaker for the feral cats at the Loews Portofino Resort.  The result, “A Voice for the Loews Cats” is well worth the read, as George shares some great insight into the Loews vs. feral cats debate. Personally, it seems like the longer our economy continues to struggle, the less human and the less caring corporate America gets.  It would be nice to see some big American corporation take a stand.  Skechers failed.  Komen failed.  Even the Lions Club can’t be counted on these days.  Loews has an opportunity right now to do the right thing.  But will they? Don’t miss “A Voice for the Loews Cats – My Exclusive Interview with Caretaker, George Ricci” For more information: Check out “Loews Loathes Pets” from Riverfront Cats, USA Today’s “Loews Orlando resorts...

Waco Lions Club evicts 9 feral cats and their caregivers

Waco Lions Club evicts 9 feral cats and their caregivers

On Saturday, the Waco Lions Club effectively evicted 9 spayed, neutered, and vaccinted feral cats from their property, forcing the volunteers who had been caring for them to remove the feeding station and the cat’s shelter.  The Lions Club has threatened to post NO TRESPASSING signs to forbid the volunteers from continuing to feeding them. Nine feral cats are now left with no food, no shelter, and no one to care for them.  Very sad. Since 2007, Heart of Texas Feral Friends, a group associated with the Humane Society of Central Texas has cared for the cats on the Lions Club property, with their permission.  When the volunteers started TNR’ing he cats back in 2007, there were 40+ of them.  Thanks to TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return), today there are now only nine.  Their efforts resulted in a perfect example of what TNR is – a humane approach to caring for feral...

Six ponies, 1 horse rescued by SPCA of Texas; too late for 4 others

This just in from the SPCA of Texas…Under the authority of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, the SPCA of Texas seized seven starving animals–six ponies and one horse–on Thursday, December 22nd from a Dallas County property in the 2000 block of Wagon Wheels Trail in Dallas. The animals were not receiving appropriate food, water or care. Four other horses were found deceased on the property. The six ponies were found living with two of the deceased horses–a mare and a foal–in a large makeshift pen constructed of barbed wire strung between trees and old fencing material. These horses had gnawed off all of the bark as high as they could reach and are very thin to emaciated. The seventh live horse was found in a separate, eight foot by eight foot pen which also contained a chicken coop and other debris. This horse is also very thin. Two other deceased horses were found inside two other, separate pens made of chain...

“All I want for Christmas Is a Bone….”

“All I want for Christmas Is a Bone….”

Guest post by Molly Peterson, Collin County Humane Society We recently received an email about a little boy who’s only wish for Christmas was a gift for his best friend; what a selfless request from such a young boy. You see, this boy did not make the request because he had everything he needs (what young boy does). The Christmas wish was requested from a young boy in a very sad situation who in fact didn’t know where his next meal was coming from; But when given the chance to ask for anything, the little boy looked to Santa and said, “I really want a bone for my best friend…my dog.” Our hearts broke at the thought of not having the means to provide for our families and pets. The simple request of a bone for his dog symbolizes more than just a dog without a bone, it shines...

Christmas event opportunity for rescue groups and pet vendors

Christmas event opportunity for rescue groups and pet vendors

The Petropolitan will be hosting the first annual “Petropolitan Santa-Paws” celebration and Waggin Parade.  Space is free for all who wish to attend as vendors. The event will focus on Rescue groups and education of responsible pet ownership.  Vendors will be required to provide their own avenue for fund-raising, but we encourage it to be fun and festive.  Pictures with Santa or host a Apple Cider/hot coco bar, anything fun and festive for the holidays!  There is no charge for vendors (non or for profit) to attend, however each group is required to fill out an intent form and registration form for the event.  Any group not showing after filing an intent form will be charged $50 to cover the cost of marketing the event. The Mayor’s office has asked us coordinate this as a destination event at City Gardens annually. The event will run from 11-2 on Saturday...
