Dallas Companion Animal Project: Crossroads Community Outreach Needs Pet Food

Pet Owner Outreach is an important component of the Dallas Companion Animal Project’s plan to make Dallas a No Kill Community.  Helping pet owners with limited financial means find and utilize available resources to better care for their pets means keeping those pets in loving homes and out of shelters and rescues.  Here’s what they are doing, how, and what you can do to help. What DCAP Is Doing: Keeping pets in loving homes and out of shelters and rescues is an integral part of the DCAP plan.  To that end, DCAP supplied over 40,000 lbs. of pet food to low income food banks, the homeless, and local rescue groups between August of 2012 and March of 2013.  They have worked with Crossroads Community Center in downtown Dallas, Angie Manrigurez, Duck Team 6 and others, and secured donations from Bark to Basics,  Pet Supplies Plus, Dallas Animal Services, Elliotts...

Your action is needed to keep Texas House from gutting the Dangerous Wild Animal Act

Your action is needed to keep Texas House from gutting the Dangerous Wild Animal Act

The Dangerous Wild Animal Act (DWAA), passed in 2001 with the support of the Texas Humane Legislation Network, requires the owner of a dangerous wild animal (a lion, a tiger, cougar, leopard, cheetah, jaguar, bear, coyote, hyena, jackal, baboon, gorilla, etc.) to register the animal with the local animal control authority and send a copy of the registration certificate to the Texas Department of State Health Services. This is important for several reasons: it allows the public who live near these dangerous animals to know where and what type of dangerous animals are being kept and by whom so they can take whatever precautions they think appropriate to ensure their safety and the safety of their family. it also provides law enforcement and disaster relief agencies the information needed to protect the public’s safety if the animal escapes and in emergency situations and natural disasters such as floods, fire,...

Off The Ground event Saturday will build 50 beds for shelter dogs

The Petropolitan and Freehand Corporation have teamed up to bring "Off The Ground!!!" to Dallas. The goal of this event is to build 50 elevated dog beds for donation to local animal shelters. These beds are designed to elevate the animals from the floor and enhance their overall comfort. The beds are constructed of heavy duty PVC and water/weather/puncture resistant denier 1000, and are built to last. The beds will be donated to small municipal shelters in the outlying areas of the DFW Metroplex – shelters tend to have limited resources and less visibility than the larger cities in the area – including  Lake Worth Animal Shelter, Seagoville Animal Shelter, and more.   "Off The Ground!!" was inspired by Columbus Rescue Connection. They have donated over 800 elevated dog beds to shelters in rural Ohio, and inspired countless other bed-making projects across the country, making a huge difference in...

Help needed to find the person who poisoned 2 Boxers in Fort Worth

Sad news – On August 22nd, someone fed chicken and steak laced with antifreeze, either over or through the fence, to two boxers who were playing in their backyard. The dogs were quickly rushed to the veterinarian but despite receiving round-the-click care for three agonizing days, they could not recover.  The two dog’s were named Nala and Bruno. Nala’s owners were fostering Bruno for Legacy Boxer Rescue. That’s them in the photo above left (Nala in the front and Bruno behind). Now LBR is asking for the public’s help finding out who did this. According to the group, the Fort Worth Police Department has followed all leads and done their best to find the person(s) responsible, but to no avail. So LBR has put up a $4,000 reward and they’re asking the public for help. LBR volunteers are going door-to-door in the neighborhood where the incident happened, passing out...

Tanner is lost in River Legacy Park – spread the word!

Tanner has been missing since around 2:30 Saturday afternoon. He is 12 now and is starting to show some signs of senility, but they sporadic. He is a black dog and it could be that the heat made him get a little disoriented and he got turned around – no one knows.  He went down to a creek that is situated in an open area behind the River Oaks Apartments on Green Oaks Blvd. This area backs up to River Legacy Park. The area is highly wooded and seems to go on forever so he could be anywhere. If you are in this area for any reason please be on the look out for the old guy. Tanner is wearing a new collar but no I.D. tag.  He is micro-chipped, though. His owner is devastated.  If you find Tanner, or think you’ve seen him, please call ###-####. UPDATE: Tanner...

Your Call Today Can Save Horses from Slaughter

Guest post by Pamela Duffy Horse slaughter is about to become legal in the US again!  We need to flood our US Senators and US House reps with phone calls TODAY and TOMORROW!  The horse slaughter situation is looking really bleak, and this is the last chance effort to prevent horse slaughter from starting up again in the US.  If you want to help, it’s easy—look up your US senators and your US house rep at the link below (if you’re in Texas, I’ve supplied numbers below), call their office, give them your name and zip code, tell them you are a constituent and read this quote or some variation of it:  “Please co-sponsor or at least support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S.1176/H.R. 2966).”    You can even call late at night if you’d rather leave a voicemail. Please share this information. The more people calling, the better...
