Humane Society of Flower Mound’s “Love on Wheels” transport program sends dogs to new homes in New York

March 26, 2013

On March 4, 2013, the Humane Society of Flower Mound (HSFM) put three dogs on a truck bound for Dewitt, NY.  It was the beginning of an innovative new program that will send dogs to partner organizations in other parts of the United States where adoptable dogs are in short supply.  The first transport was so successful, that another six dogs left Texas bound for New York yesterday. “Love on Wheels” takes dogs facing euthanasia from shelters in the DFW area and sends them to rescue organizations in the northeast such as New York, where effective spay/neuter and education programs have resulted in adopters being placed on waiting lists to find available rescued dogs. “It’s a little surreal to those of us in Texas who see hundreds of dogs in shelters every week with no place to go, to think that there are places where people want to adopt...

Efforts underway to assist pet victims of Colorado fires

The numbers are staggering.  18,000+ acres burned, 3,200 evacuated, hundreds of homes destroyed.  But what about the pets? Larimer Humane Society is working on the ground with local law enforcement to rescue pets and livestock in the High Park fire zone, providing owner-requested food and water to animals not evacuated (as permitted by Fire and Sheriff authorities), reuniting owners with lost animals, and providing temporary shelter for evacuated animals. Find out more about their efforts and how you can help HERE. The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region has been accepting pets from evacuees at their main facility, and has now expanded to a secondary site for pets evacuated from the path of the Waldo Canyon Fires. Staff, veterinarians, and volunteers are working 24 hours a day at the Expo Center site, donated by Freedom Financial Services. HSPPR is also working on the ground with local law enforcement...

Dallas Animal Services & Humane Society of West Texas partnership saves 100 cats and kittens in one day

It’s kitten season once again and Dallas Animal Services is overflowing with cats and kittens with nowhere to go.  But this past Friday, nearly 100 kittens and their moms got a second chance when the Humane Society of West Texas in Lubbock stepped in and transferred them all to the foster-home based rescue group. It was a huge undertaking, and a great example of how partner organizations can help each other save more lives.  DAS staff and rescue coordinator worked overtime Friday, processing the necessary paperwork for all 100 cats and kittens. HSWT volunteers were able to get on the road with their precious cargo late that afternoon, arriving back in Lubbock very late Friday night. They then stayed up most of the night getting everyone fed, watered, and settled in. Any way you look at it, 100 cats and kittens are a lot to care for.  If you...

The Humane Society of the United States has released its third annual “Humane State Ranking,”and Texas comes in #25 out of 51.  That’s way up from last year’s 36th place ranking, thanks to recently enacted laws aimed a shutting down puppy mills and tightening dangerous dog laws.  The report rated  all 50 states and Washington, D.C. on a wide range of animal protection laws, including animal cruelty codes, equine protection standards, wildlife issues, animals in research, and farm animal policy. California earned the highest ranking in the report again this year, and South Dakota the lowest.  Oklahoma dropped to 26th, New Mexico to 27th, and Louisiana dropped to 34th. The entire 2011 report  is now available online.     Subscribe via email (above right) so you don’t miss any breaking rescue news, adoptable pets, happy endings, or special event invitations.  Your email address will not be shared. Where does Texas stand in HSUS’ just-released Humane State Rankings?

The Humane Society of the United States has released its third annual “Humane State Ranking,” a comprehensive report rating all 50 states and Washington, D.C. on a wide range of animal protection laws, including animal cruelty codes, equine protection standards, wildlife issues, animals in research, and farm animal policy. Earning the highest scores in the HSUS report are California (first place), New Jersey and Oregon (tied for second place), and Illinois and Massachusetts (tied for fourth). Where do you think Texas falls?  Do we still have an overabundance of “good ol’ boys” in Austin, or have we started to make progress?  How far do you think we’ve come compared to the rest of the country. Leave your guesses in the comments (no, don’t Google it – this isn’t research, it’s for fun!).  We’ll post the answer tomorrow! Subscribe via email (above right) so you don’t miss any breaking rescue...
